Freedom and Choice for AP Government and Politics Studies
“I want to give students a college experience where they have more freedom and choice…teach them how to learn and be lifelong learners,” says Randy Cambou, who teaches AP Government and Politics to 12th graders at Grossmont Union High School District.

To support students in choosing to learn the way they learn best, Mr. Cambou wanted to make the course content dynamic and relevant for his students. He intertwined the content of the course with current events and opportunities for students to drive their learning. Read more.

Learning Smart: Genius Hour with Gooru
Students at Rancho Minerva Middle School in Vista USD getting the first look at their strengths.

What comes to mind when you think of Genius Hour? Genius hour is a movement that encourages independent student exploration and creativity during set-aside classroom time. Students use project-based learning to dive into areas that are meaningful to them.

Our partners at Thrively have created a platform popular among teachers rolling out Genius Hour projects. Thrively measures 23 different strengths and takes a deep dive into over 200 student interests. Classroom conversations spark when students see their Thrively Strength Profile–a glimpse into their individual genius.

Check out Thrively’s Strength Assessment, Teacher Toolkit with classroom activities, and lots of Genius Hour inspiration in Thrively’s Gooru class (Class Code AWL4YEC). You’ll also find this collection of Genius Hour resources.

Engaging Parents in Student Learning
We hope you use winter break for some well-deserved R&R, but also consider asking parents to use the time to become familiar with how students are learning. Gooru teacher extraordinaire (and new parent!) Sarah Smith created two Gooru courses for parents to learn more about how Gooru works and understand national standards such as Common Core.
